Our History

C. Boyce Bell

After returning from duty in World War II, C. Boyce Bell and W. Carroll (Buddy) Bell partnered with their father W.C. Bell so they could fulfill the growing need they saw in the Piedmont area of North Carolina for an excavating business that served every phase of industry, business, and homeowners. They established W.C. Bell & Sons on C Street in Statesville, NC in 1946.

In 1956, the business was incorporated. W.C. Bell decided to enter semi-retirement and sold his interest to his younger sons, Bruce F. Bell and Donald R. Bell, in 1962. The need for expansion became clear as the company kept growing, so in 1963 a new shop and office was built on Northside Drive. The company was renamed Bell Construction Co., Inc. at that time.

Under the leadership of Boyce Bell, the company grew from the early 1960's to the late 1980's with grading and utility work remaining the primary focus. After Boyce's passing, Donald Bell assumed the position of President from 1987 till his death in 2003. With his guidance, Bell Construction Co., Inc. began to provide slip-form concrete curb and gutter services.

Dwayne F. Bell has served as the President since 2003. With his direction, the firm has invested heavily in its facilities and its fleet of equipment and vehicles. Keeping with the fast pace world of technology, the company has also invested in grade control with machines that are laser and GPS compatible.

David Sherrill assumed the position of Vice President in 2006. The company's entire fleet of machinery and vehicles are maintained under his supervision. Preventative maintenance, major component rebuilds, and custom fabrication are all performed in-house. David was also instrumental in the company's entry into concrete recycling.

Although Bell Construction Co., Inc. consists of only about 25 employees, they offer services that are often found with large contractors. Construction surveying for all of the projects the company undertakes is performed by their staff surveyor, Robert Sherrill, who is a registered land surveyor and a valuable asset to both Bell and their clients. Thomas Setser serves as the firm's estimator. With his expertise, the firm is able to offer cost savings through "value engineering."

The firm has a reputation for building relationships with both their clients and their employees. Bell has a number of employees with well over 10 years of service with the company and all but one of Bell's foremen have over 20 years of service with the company.

There are many factors that have contributed to Bell's ongoing success: a knowledgeable professional staff that takes pride in their work, long term employees who share the vision of the management, a well maintained fleet, the implementation of modern technology, and a focus on relationships with the firm's clients. While all of these things have played a role in the firm's achievements since the inception in 1946, it is the management's responsibility, honesty, and integrity that has truly set them apart.
